Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Identity theft

I received a invoice from iron planet auction they were billing me 2,500 for a default fee because someone miss use my information and place a bid on a machine. I try talking with this company explaining that I didnt have anything to do with this bid.

But they say they couldnt do anything because I was to late this happen three weeks ago and they say that they couldnt research were the bid came from.

And my account was already in default and a collection agency already had my information and they were going to contact me. The only information that they have is my name , address and name of the bank were I have my accounts .

What steps should I take with this matter?

Can they send me to collection with just that information?

I live in Virginia.

Thank you
