Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia
A medical bill from a collection agency showed up on my credit report for Dr services related to my minor daughter having her appendix out. She was covered by both her mother's and my insurance (along with an HSA) so paying was no problem. The hospital initially used a incorrect address to bill the insurance company for all the bills but that was corrected and most bills were paid. The 2 bills not paid are from associate specialty offices who continued to bill incorrectly claiming the hospital did not inform them. I never knew of the bills until they showed up on the credit report and they were not paid by insurance because of the incorrect info (all other bills were paid). Out of $31,000 in bills only these bills $574 were not paid... I've contact the main biller and specialty companies several times with no luck. Should I just pay the collection company or hire an attorney to get the hospital system (who made the error in the first place) to fix, bill the insurance properly and remove the info from my credit report? If I hire an attorney is it possible to seek legal cost reimbursement?

Hiring an attorney for this kind of small claim would be unlikely to prove cost effective.
The better approach would probably be to pay the claim and then request to add
your explanation for this billing snafu to your credit report maintained by each
of the major CRAs. (My opinion.)
