Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Medical debt affecting credit

We had a baby in VA 8/03.We were sent medical bills for our medical expenses by the hospital for $2400.The Hospital started contacting us right away to collect on this debt, we told them that we were not able to afford this debt, and that we would pay what we could to them for however long it takes to pay the debt. In Nov, we moved to FL. After a few months, the debt was transferred to a collector, in which we arranged to continue paying. We continued paying atleast $50/m.Our debt is now $1200, and I just received a letter that our debt has been transferred again to a secondary collector, even though I paid $100 2 weeks ago. They told me that they will be reporting my debt to the credit agencies until we pay it off. I explained yesterday that we can commit to $20/m min.2 Hurricanes rolled through our town. Our house is unlivable and we are waiting on insurance $.If this medical debt appears on our credit reports,it will affect our credit standing with the refinancing process. Is there anything we can do to avoid these medical debts from blemishing up our credit? This is affecting us and I fear that we do not have any protection from these aggressive collection practices used by this medical debt collector.

Re: Medical debt affecting credit

What's important in terms of your credit rating is not the fact that the debt itself is being reported to credit reporting agencies but the fact that you continue to pay down the debt each and every month.
