Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

MI judgement on a VA resident

I have a Michigan judgment against a Virginia resident, what do I need to do to collect on it? From what I have read, I first need to file for a sister-state judgment, which should be on the VA websites, however I can not find anything like that. Does VA have different rules? Is the form under a different name?

Do I have to hire an attorney to do this for me, or can I do it myself from MI?

Also, can they fight me in applying for a sister-state judgment?

Re: MI judgement on a VA resident

If you are an individual, legally you can do it without a lawyer. You need an affidavit in proper form, and a "triple seal" certified copy of the judgment. That is filed in the appropriate circuit court with the filing fee. The judgment debtor has 21 days from service to move to vacate it (normally on grounds that the issuing court lacked jurisdiction). Once it's docketed, you can have enforcement process issued. Again, this is theoretically possible to do from out of state, and without a lawyer, but the Va. courts do not do much to facilitate that, and you may need to appear in court during the process.
