money borrowed from family member

my wife and i borrowed money from her mother for things over the years and now they want to garnish my wages for the amount owed, is that true

No, it not true that "they"(whoever they may be)may simply garnish your wages for amounts which are believed to be allegedly owed by you. "They" must first file a lawsuit against you

and succeed in convincing a judge by a preponderance of the evidence that in fact you do owe this money and therefore that a judgment for this amount plus any appropriate collateral costs should be awarded against you and in favor of the plaintiff.

Then your wages may be subsequently garnished after the appropriate garnishment procedures have been implemented by the successful plaintiff.
