Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

ownership of home credit cards

My husband's name and my name are both on the deed to our house. He died recently leaving debts to credit cards not in my name. Since I am not on the cards I understand I do not have to pay them. It is quite a bit and I do not have the resources to pay them. The credit card co's are telling me that since there is no estate, they are going to go after his assets, meaning the house. They say since the deed reads (and my name) and not joint with right to surviourship that they can get the money from my equity. Several months ago we took out a equity loan to make repairs on the home and to pay off since high debts. We had quite alot and paid only the highest ones so the ones he had were not paid off. We just continued making payments. I have since refinanced the house in my name only and did not get a cash settlement. Can they make me get more equity out or put a lein on my house. He has 3 cards with about 10000 on 2 different ones and 500 on another. What shoul I do?

Re: ownership of home credit cards

Better arrange for a consultation with an attorney to review the current state of the title to your property as well as the claims of the credit card companies and who should then be able to advise you on an appropriate course of action for your situation.
