Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

I recently had my bank account garnished of $1900 from a previous residence in which a room mate walked out without paying rent (he was on the lease and filed for bankruptcy after the fact) however, there was only $400 in my account. I am unemployed and not collecting unemployment benefits. I did not receive any type of paperwork regarding a court date or a garnishment. Is it legal for a company to do this?

No, you must be given proper notice of the lawsuit naming you as a defendant and the opportunity to contest it.
