Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Single Mom needs assistance with Creditor/Debtor issue.

During my marriage I co-signed for a vehicle for my husband, and he voluntarily surrender the vehichle. Sine we have divorced, and I realize that I am obligated to pay off the debt, which is approx 15K. He has moved out of the U.S., therefore the debt is soley my responsiblity which I've been making payments since 2008, the car was returned in 2007. A new collection agency (Plaza Assoc) has taken over the account, which they are requiring $1000.00 in order to continue the electronic deductions from my checking account. Unfortunately, I don't have the money but can afford to continue making payments. What should I do? Thanks for your response.

Tell these predator collectors exactly that, i.e., you can continue with the monthly payments that you've been making but don't have the $1000 surcharge they're attempting to impose upon you to effect electronic deductions from your checking account(which should be refused even if you could afford it).
