Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

spousal responsibility for student loans

My wife left law school without graduating, and owes $45,000. She is now unemployed, and I am paying the debt. If she defaults, am I responsible? Does it hit my credit rating? We're in a non-community property state, and the loan is consolidated (but I did not co-sign).

Re: spousal responsibility for student loans

You are not liable if you did not sign. Merely being a spouse of a borrower does not make you liable for the loans.
