Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Spouse's responsibility for other spouse's personal debt

Am I responsible for my husband's credit card debt that he accummulated prior to our marriage?

(He is not working, by choice.....do I have to pay his bills---he doesn't care whether or not they

are paid......should I?)

Re: Spouse's responsibility for other spouse's personal debt

If the debt was not incurred(accmulated?)during your marriage, technically, you're not responsible for it unless there was a prenuptial agreement that made you responsible.

However, as a practical matter, if your husband slips into a default situation, you, as his spouse, carrying his name(or a hyphenated version thereof), and sharing the same household with him, will,in all probability, experience some taint to your general credit worthiness as perceived by creditors out there in the world of lending and credit.
