Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

spouse's student loans

If one marries a spouse who incurred significant student loans prior to the marriage, does the spouse who had no student loans become liable for the loans of the spouse who did incur them? If so, is there legally a preventive way to negate or minimize that liability, should a future death or divorce situation arise? Thank you.

Re: spouse's student loans

The non-liable spouse does not become liable (unless you co-sign or guarantee them).
