Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia
Statue of Limitations
I had my bathroom renovated in 2006 and paid in full with a credit card I no longer have. The renovation company is now saying I still owe $500. It's been over 2 years. How can I prove to them I paid and isn't it too late?

Re: Statue of Limitations
Did you not get a receipt showing it was paid in full? The credit card company should have documentation showing the payment. Also, the renovation company should have similar documentation. You might ask them to provide it to you. You might also consult an attorney experienced in consumer rights litigation.
Good luck!
Re: Statue of Limitations
No, it may not be too late for the renovation company to attempt to enforce its claim against you since oral contracts have a SOL of three years
in the Commonwealth and written ones extend to five years.
(You may, however, still be able to obtain a record of your payment of this bill from the card issuer, if you make the request--preferably in writing.)
