Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

How do I stop collection action on an account I didn't co-sign?

My ex-wife incurred a debt (while we were still married) from her employer at the time, for about $900, about three years ago. She has since left that job and we were divorced. About a month ago, I got a notice from a collection agency, and a bill for $1200 (interest). The bill has her name listed first.

I wrote to the collection agency, disputing the debt, since I had nothing to do with it whatsoever. They sent me a copy of the original invoice, and it had my ex-wife's SSN # on it.

Should I be worried? I have no intention of paying this. It's entirely possible that her employer added my name to the account without my knowledge, since I did meet her in person on several occasions. Is it even legal to add someone to an account without their knowledge? They apparently don't have my SSN #, so should I be concerned about my credit?

Thanks for your help. This is a wonderful service.

You should not be liable for another's debt without actually co-signing unless that person was your spouse and unless the debt was also a "necessary" under VA law. If they sue you, you will need to defend or they will obtain a judgement and your credit will be adversely affected.
