Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia
time limitation to collect on old judgement
In 1989, we won a judgement in General District Court against someone for $4200. She agreed to make payments, but after one payment, she disappeared. Our attorney told us at the time that it would be very costly to locate her and that we might still be unable to collect on the debt. I do have her social security number and wondered if she would still legally be bound to pay on the judgement if I would be able to find her. If so, what is the best way to locate her and to start the process of collection. Thank you.

Re: time limitation to collect on old judgement
Unless you renewed the judgment in the general district court for another 10 years within the period permitted by law, i.e., 10 years from the date it was entered in 1989, it would no longer be valid nor collectible.
