Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Unapproved withdrawal from Checking Account

the creditor took out of my checking account twice the amount that was agreed uponed (instead of 1 payment they took out two payments, and the creditor agreed that it was an error made by their system. Now they don't want to replace the extra payment and return it to my checking account instead they are crediting it towards my Jan payment. My question what options do i have to get them to give me back that extra payment that was taken out? and what can I do to protect myself from this happening again?

Thank you

Re: Unapproved withdrawal from Checking Account

Discontinue the automatic withdrawals(if the creditor will agree to it)and remit by personal check whatever payments have been agreed upon each month in a timely fashion.
