Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

My university mixed up student accounts and by mistake made the tuition payments I made go into another students account. Since these were cash payments, and I no longer have the receipts they say there is no way to track the money or even prove that I even made the payments in the first place. They now claim that I'm fully responsible for re-paying my tuition. Is this fair?
