Unpaid back taxes

We moved away from Conn. 14 years ago. This week I got a bill from a collection angency claiming we owe $3000.00 to the city tax collector for unpaid property tax on cars. This is the first time I had heard from them in 14 years. I called the city and they claim we owe for 1992-1994. I have no way to prove this was paid since I no longer have cancelled checks from that long ago. What can I do? Thanks
