Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Virginia Code 8.3A

We wrote on 3 checks paying back a judgement owed to a company after we were evicted the amount we now owe after them cashing the checks (ex: We now owe $1621.50). All three were cashed, but the fourth their lawyers told us he couldnt cash when we did the same thing because he would be ''bound to the amount'' if he cashed it. When we asked if he was already bound to the amount because they had cashed the first 3 checks with the same notation on it he said he would check virginia code, which he did and sent us a letter saying they agree their client should not have cashed the checks and he would remove the interest up to that day they cashed the last check, but he refused to give us the virginia code that he had found about it.

Re: Virginia Code 8.3A

Not sure what your question is. Was there a written agreement regarding the payments, etc? If not, did you put PAID IN FULL language or other language on the checks identifying the agreed amount to be paid? You can search the code at:

Not sure why you need the code cite if you already saved yourself some money.
