Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

warrant in debt

Less than a year ago my friend became critically ill. Thankfully, he has recovered. During his recovery he lost his job and is currently umemployed. He recently received a ''warrant in debt'' for a dentist bill he accrued prior to his illness. He knows he has to pay this bill and is concerned that if he is found guilty he will go to jail. I've tried to explain that this is a civil action and that won't happen. Maybe I'm wrong so can you please send me some information on this. Your help will be greatly appriciated.

Re: warrant in debt

A warrant in debt is a civil suit in General District Court in VA. Just a funny name (with foggy historical roots, like much in VA law) for a civil G.D. Court lawsuit. No jail - just a money judgment if the Defendant is found liable.
