Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Virginia

Warrent In Debt from 1992

Preparing to close on selling a house, we found that a family member has a Warrent in Debt filed in Salem, Va from 1992. That was 17 years ago. We believe the debt was paid, as I took a loan out some time back and paid all of this person's outstanding debts. What is the statue of limitations for a Warrant in Debt filed in General District Court in VA? How would I go about getting the details about this debt? How would I dispute this debt? What are my options to challenge this judgement? The original amount is $1092.52 plus 9% interest since 1992. The family member wasn't aware of this judgement until the attorney working on the closing brought to our attention.

Re: Warrent In Debt from 1992

Judgments properly recorded in the general district court are good for 10 years and can be renewed for another 10.

You could contact the judgment creditor of record for details concerning this debt. (This is the person or entity which received the judgment against your family member.)

After 17 years, I suspect it's a little late either for you or anyone else to be thinking about challenging the merits of this particular judgment.
