Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia
I am a 64 yo female got into a spat with my neighbor, my car was on the street, I was in mycar with the engine on, & in park. She was an off duty police traffic officer. The spat was over her sons basketball goalee in the street at curb. My car was within inches of the goalee. She said "I know the law!!" where upon she leaped onto the goalee and screamed she has been hurt, "call the police!!". When the police arrived no ticket was issued, no arrest. But I was charged with assault/battery and destorying property. Incident happened 3/5/11. I can't afford an attorney.. Question: I want to represent myself. What are the do's and don'ts. Should I try to find a paralegal to assist me. What are my chances. Fines are up to $2500 . Please help!!

If you cannot afford to hire a competent criminal defense counsel to represent you in this matter, at least schedule a consultation with one who can advise you as to how you might best prepare your case and conduct your defense at the trial.
Forget about the paralegal.
Taking an advance on a credit card may help or borrowing money. A paralegal is essentially and assistant. He/she may know some case law. A paralegal is not a litigator. You may lose in the long run financially if you attempt to cut costs now. Perhaps not. Good luck. Attorney Sheryl Shane. Web: www.sherylshanelaw.com.
