Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

I am a 60 yr woman that accepted a plea bargain in 2008 in Colorado for sexual conduct in a penal institution. I was a secretary on a contract position and became involved with an inmate that when he was released I married him which ended within two years in divorce. I was convicted of a class 5 felony and I was given 18 months probation which was successfully completed on an interstate transfer to Virginia where I had moved to. Colorado said I had to register for 10 years on the sex offender registry. I just started my 9th year of registering and was reading that Virginia requires sex offenders to register for 15 years. Does my sentence of 10 years hold up in Virginia?

No, apparently not, per Va Code Sec. 9.1-910, i.e., petitions for relief from having

to register in Virginia apparently cannot be filed in the circuit court of the city or county where you live any earlier than 15 years (irrespective of where you were first

required to be on another state's registry).

However, notwithstanding the above, you might want to double check it by calling the

hotline of the Virginia State Police at 1-804-674-2825 which owns as well as maintains

the Commonwealth's registry.
