accidental shoplift

I accidentally shoplifted an 3.99 ashtray from spencers it fell into my other shopping bags when i was trying to pick up a mess my sister made ...i got a letter in the mail today from spencers co. lawyers telling me i had 20 days to pay them 357.99 or further action might take place ....can they fine me that much for me accidentally taking a 3.99 ashtray ...and if so do i have to pay that all at once or can i make payments...im so scared ive never done anything bad i didnt even do this on purpose ...this is so stressful

I would recommend that you schedule a consultation with a criminal defense counsel to review this demand letter from the Spencer's Company lawyers and the facts surrounding your taking of the ashtray, and who can then advise you, accordingly.
