tried as a adult
if a 17 year old is tried as a adult and they choose a jury trial does the judge still do the sentencing?

No, once the minor has been tried and convicted as an adult, he or she is treated as an adult defendant would be treated in such a situation, and sentenced by that jury under current Virginia rules.
