What's wrong with the conviction? Nothing at all.
Re: Right Conviction?
Such booby traps with secreted spring or similarly loaded firearms designed to discharge without warning to deter house burglars or other trespassers have been illegal for years in virtually every jurisdiction in the United States for reasons which are illustrated by your description of what happened to these three nineteen year olds.
If the boobytrapper has now been convicted of attempted murder or some variant thereof, he would now be well advised to start searching for a lawyer to defend him against the
civil charges which are now virtually certain to follow his conviction for this very serious felony (or felonies).
