Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia
Cost of fines
I have a shoplifting fine under $500.00 and my court date is coming up. I'm just wondering about how much this fine will be so I'll know how much money to go in with and what to expect. I've never been in any trouble so I'm not sure what to expect.

Re: Cost of fines
Since shoplifting is a criminal and jailable offense, you should have an attorney representing you in this matter (and answering these questions).
As a first time offender you should be eligible for the disposition known as SIS(Suspended Imposition of Sentence),
which, if granted, and you complete your year long probation successfully, should leave you with no record of a conviction for this particular offense.
You will also have to pay a fine and court costs which can be arranged to be paid on the installment plan if you request it. (If you wish to pay the whole thing immediately, paying by check is preferable or credit card so you don't have to be concerned about bringing cash to the courthouse (where known disreputable characters are wont to visit).
