How does the definition of crime determine who is subjected to probation and parole?

The more serious the crime of which one is convicted, the less likely such a person would receive merely probation with conditions or, if incarcerated in a penitentiary type setting in a jurisdiction which still recognizes parole, the
less likely would such a person(say, someone convicted of multiple child molestaions) be released early before his full sentence has been serve as opposed to an inmate who has serving time on a less serious offense(such as embezzlement).
