Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia
defense attorney/client confidentiality
If a competent defendent discloses his guilt of a cold blooded murder charge to his lawyer but request that lawyer to continue to defend him, is the lawyer required by law to disclose this information or is it just an ethical situation where the lawyer should disclose the information?

Re: defense attorney/client confidentiality
An attorney may not disclose this information at all. However, the attorney may not put the person on the stand if the attorney knows that the person is going to commit perjury.
