Domestic Abuse/Possible fraud

My self and my girlfriend who I lived with had an argument. She lunged at me and I put my arm up in self defence. When she lunged at me she landed on my arm causing her buising around her ribs and breast. When she removed herself from me I got up and left the house. She called the police and reported it has domestic violence. When I came home the police where there and I was arrested. She now has a protection order against me. I must go to court on this issue. I don't know what to do. She caused harm to herself by lunging at me and lied to the officers. How do I respond to this in court? Can I press charges against her for domestic violence and emotional abuse? And for falsifing a statement to the police? And faslifing the information she gave the judge?

Your story is a common one in domestic assault cases. Unfortunately, Virginia law no longer provides a mechanism to short circuit the case once it has been started. You must play out the case in court. A lawyer can help you greatly. Do not go to court without one.
