Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia
embezzlement
my son is 18. worked for a electronics store. he issued store vouchers to himself on 5 seperaate occassions. he was arrested and charged with one felony charge. i am a mgr for the company he stole from. i want to throw the book at him but this would follow him the rest of his life. he is still in high school. he is going to fail. who will hire him. i am looking at his future. i want him to pay for his crime but i don't want it to follow him for the rest of his life. what can i do to help him? Is there a chance this could be reduced to something lesser? he cooperated with our loss prevention and the police. thanks

Re: embezzlement
You have not stated the value of the vouchers, however if the total is less than $200.00, or the amount stated on the one felony charge is less than $200.00 you may be able to prevail upon the commonwealth to reduce the charge to misdemeanor petty larceny. There are some (creative) sentencing alternatives that might assist your son. If he makes restitution prior to the case going to court, the commonwealth might be willing to consider a deferred disposition, or a pre-conviction probation. If he has an unblemished record prior to now, that may help as well. Good luck. Monica Chernin, Culpeper, Virginia
