Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

Hello, my name is ericka jackson an i am 30 yrs old. in 2003 i committed a crime of petit larceny was advised to to community service, probation for 1 yr and paid a fine. i was also advised afterward the offense could be expunged. Well years went by and i had no issues getting a job until i was laid off in 2005. i then began a vigorous job hunt and to my surprise the offense has been holding me from employment ever since bc it was an act of dishonesty. i am so heart broken and tired. i have contacted lawyers for advice and have been told since i live in a commonwealth that the offense cannot be expunged and it will hinder me for life. Please tell me this isnt true.i have gone to school an obtained a degree in which i cannot use bc of a misdemeanor. i am ever so desperate, i am willing to do anything to have this expunged or what ever process so that i may have my life back an provide for my family. Desperate in Va..Thank you

I regret to report that under Va. Code Sec. 19.2-392 et seq, what you've been told regarding the expungement of your record of criminal conviction is, unfortunately, correct(until the state legislature amends the law ro allow for a more lenient approach--particularly, for first time offenders.)
