felony conviction and carrer in law
I am a pre law student standing at the threshhold of being convicted as a felon for; 3rd dwi in 10 years. Can i still become a lawyer in VA? I have a green card, how is this going to effect my legal status? Is deportation or denial of a new green card an issue in this matter?

Re: felony conviction and carrer in law
Yes, your soon to be conferred felony status could affect your suitability to become an attorney in the Commonwealth as determined by the Virginia State Bar which passes on all such matters, but SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States) has already ruled(in a Florida case)that even a DUI conviction connected with a negligent homicide matter is not an aggravated felony for purposes of removal proceedings under the auspices of the Department of Homeland Security.
You might want to check with the VSB unit responsible for attorney admission to see what they might have to say about your situation and whether it might bar your admission to the bar.
