How can I get a felony conviction from 1989 expunged?

As I'm sure you've already been told, you cannot expunge convictions in VA. You may expunge the record of an arrest if you were found not guilty. The only method of expungement is a pardon from the governor and that is extremely rare.

If you were "convicted," then you probably need a pardon from the governor. Were you an adult at the time?

Criminal convictions are not expungable in the Commonwealth unless the petitioner has received an "absolute pardon" for a crime for which he was unjustly convicted. See Va. Code Sec. 19.2-392.2.
