Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia
Grand Larceny
I am currently an 18 year old college student, working full time and made a terrible mistake. I and a friend were caught Shoplifting in Macy's Department store. Friend and i were in same fitting room, walked out together, switched purses for whatever reason on the way out. Caught as we were leaving the store. The bag i was carrying had aprox. $320 worth of clothing, the bag she was carrying $120. We have the same court date friday, so i believe we are being sentenced together. Both of us are first time offenders, so i hope that we will recieve ''first time offenders status'' so i am hoping that, this charge will be reduced to a misdemeanor, and possibly have probation and community service. What are my chances of receiving a lesser sentence, or the most likely outcome of this situation?

There is no way to predict what the Judge will do, and you should consult with your lawyer about possible sentences and about his or her experience in that Court. Having no criminal history should help some. It never hurts to be contrite and remorseful and also apologize to the store. A number of judges will give a fine and jail time, but suspend some or all of the time. Good luck.

You will need an attorney to plead you out to a lesser charge.
