Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

Juvenile to adult responsibility

My son was convicted for assault at the age of 17. He fulfilled most of the requirements of the sentence, but left the state. He is now 21 and trying to get his life in order. He needs to clear this up before he can even get a driver's license. How long is an adult responsible for past juvenile crimes? Is there a time limit on his suspended sentence? Does it eventually ''go away''?

Thank you

Re: Juvenile to adult responsibility

The issue for you son is to determine exactly what happened with his juvenile case as a result

of his failure to complete all of the requirements

before he left the state(some might say absconded).

Did the court issue a warrant for his failure to

appear on a Show Cause Rule, issued after his juvenile probation officer reporterd his noncompliance to the court? Was the balance of the suspended sentence imposed by the court in his absence? These are some of the questions which can be answered by either calling his probation officer or by going to the J&DRDC(Juvenile Court) which was responsible for his case and asking to review his file.
