Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia
I left my laptop computer at a health facility in the waiting room. When I realized my mistake, the office had closed for the day, but I went in, first thing, the following morning to recover it. The receptionist told me the laptop had been found in the waiting room the day before, and that someone from the office had brought it back behind the window, to the receptionist desk. This desk is in a closed off part of the office that only employees can access with a key. When the receptionist went to retrieve my laptop for me, she was not able to find it, despite having seen it at the receptionist desk the prior evening before closing. When it became evident that someone had removed the laptop from the receptionist desk, a search of the office ensued with no result, and subsequently, the office filed a police report, but the computer was never recovered. This office is part of the county services. Does the office have any liability for the laptop? Am I legally entitled to compensation? The computer was a Macbook, and only 3 months old, so I am distressed about the financial loss as well as loss of information on the computer. I was told by one of the administrators of the Community Services that they are not at all liable. Is this correct?

You claim you were told "someone from the office had brought it back
behind the window to the receptionist desk". So, was this someone
questioned and exactly where was the laptop placed in the receptionist desk,
in a secure place(locked?) or not. --and who placed it there?
