what are the possible punishments for metro fare evasion?

Metro fare evasion is, apparently, a kind of civil infraction punishable under local ordinances by a fine only. It appears not to be an arrestable offense and therefore not a criminal offense although there does appear to be some confusion on this particular issue at least in certain courthouses in the metropolitan area.
I would conjecture the fine range to be somewhere
between $25 and $500, depending upon the circumstances, including whether or not the accused is a previous violator.
