They are also threating to charge me with auto tampering, possesion of stolen property, obtaining money under false pretences, and possibly one other. What should i do?

Re: misunderstanding

You should consult a lawyer ASAP and preferably before you talk to investigators or anyone else.

Re: misunderstanding

You definitely should not talk to the police without having an attorney present. You will not talk yourself out of getting charged. You need to hire an attorney who can more information from the detectives and who can guide you through the process.

Re: misunderstanding

In the short run, you should not talk to them, because no matter what they say it will not help you, and there is a danger that what you say -- or what they THINK you said -- can be used against you.

Secondly, you should work on documenting that you did buy it, including getting everyone involved to sign a statement, if possible, about what happened.

You might talk to the investigators only to tell them where you bought it -- AFTER you have gotten as much evidence as you can to prove that, so the seller doesn't turn on you and lie about it.

And you should get a lawyer.
