Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

Petit larceney charge

I know this was a dumb thing for me to do. I was in Food Lion one day, and decided to put some items in my purse. I had the money to pay for them. The store manager called the police. Before they came after me or anything I attempted to take the items out of my purse so that I could pay for them. Before I could take them out I was questioned and arrested. I asked both the store manager and officer if I could just pay for the items and they said no. At first they told me that I was being charged with concealment. I went to court 4/08 and pleaded not guilty the judge found me guilty. It was never brought up that i was trying to put the items back or anything which is what I was trying to do or pay for them because I felt bad for doing it. I got 12 months w/ 12 months suspended also $100 fine and had to go to a shoplifers class. Can I still become a teacher with this on my record? I have paid all fines and completed the class how can I get this off my record? Also if the person who pressed charges against me can they be dropped even though I have already been convicted? I am not sure what to do about this situation.
