Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

Procurement of alcohol for underage person

About two days ago I was cited for buying alcohol for an underage person. That person was one of my friends. Im a college student who as a clean record, never been in trouble before. The officers said that my friend and I were very cooperative, and that they would relay that to the judge. I was wonder first what to expect from this, and second, if I need to retain an attorney?

Re: Procurement of alcohol for underage person

Procurement of alchohol for an underage person in Virginia is a violation of S4.1-306 of the Criminal Code and is classified as a Class 1 misdemeanor. This is a jailable offense, carrying a term of up to 12 months and/or a fine of $2500.00.

However, as a first time offender, you should qualify for an SIS (suspended imposition of sentence), which, will mean no jail time, and, if you satisfactorily complete the conditions of your

probation(one year), that your case will be administratively closed and there will be no record of any conviction.

If you wish to be represented by counsel, you may request that the court appoint an attorney for you in the event that you cannot afford to hire one on your own.
