Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

Purchased stolen vehicle

My son (21) bought a car over the summer-91 Honda civic to drive back and forth to school (25 miles) to save on gas. He paid 1700$. Titled, tagged and insured the vehicle. The insurance tags the vehicle as a CRX and the rate is higher than normal Civic (the car is a station wagon). My son is pretty mechanically inclined and had to fix an axle to be able to drive the car--notices the VIN on the firewall is different than the one on the dash. DMV is called--after fee of 250$ state police come to investigate--trace the car back to some guy in prison who says he did NOT authorize sale of his car. State police are acting like nothing can be done?? They guy will just come get the car when he gets out of prison? Meanwhile tags expired, inspection expired, car cannot even be driven without them so it's just parked in the driveway. What options does my son have?

Re: Purchased stolen vehicle

You should consult a consumer law attorney about any civil claims you may have against the seller or others.

Re: Purchased stolen vehicle

There's quite a good chance, unfortuantely, that your son may be without a remedy as the cops apparently have already indicated.

CAVEAT EMPTOR, applies very much to stolen vehicles which are later then purchased by unsuspecting buyers.
