Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

I've been receiving hang up phone calls for almost a year. I finally decided to notify law enforcement after establishing several call traces of the calls [*57]. The deputy [reluctant to do anything, btw] said I could not discover who has been calling my phone. Is this correct? Thanks!

What credible legal authority did this deputy cite for this

opinion? Assuming none, short of utilizing wiretaps or other

clearly illegal means to intercept such calls, I know of no valid legal reason(s)

as to why you shouldn't be able to discover whatever you can regarding

these miscreant callers utilizing call tracing or similar methods to identify them.

Furthermore, you may wish to file a complaint with your telephone service

provider and request that they investigate the matter to determine

whether further information may be discoverable regarding these

miscreants beyond what you may have been able to find out on

your own.
