Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia
releasing information
The campus police from my school came to my house today looking for me. I am under investigation and have already spoke with them and told them I have nothing to say. Since no one was home they went to my neighbors house and released information about the investigation to them. They said I was under investigation for a larceny and gave my discreption and things like that. Did they have the right to do this? If my parents were home, do they have the right to tell my parents? Please remember they already contacted me telling me they wanted to speak to me and I already plead the 5th. Thank you for your help

Re: releasing information
I know of nothing in Virginia or federal law that would prohibit the campus police from questioning your neighbor or your parents, apparently, as part of their ongoing investigation into a crime in which you are, apparently, if not a suspect, at least a person of interest for purposes of this investigation for whatever reason.
