Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

Sharing of information between states

We were recently at a St. Patrick's Day parade, in PA. My two son's, one 17 and one 19, and their 17 yr. old cousin, got citations for underage drinking. We live in VA. My 17 yr. old is on probation for a marijuana possession charge. He's already served community service and is signed up for an ASAP course, has a restricted licence, etc. What happens if he doesn't report this to his probation officer and how will this affect his probation? Do states share information? We feel bad because we told them they could have one beer. They have been so good lately, honor roll, etc. What happens if they plead guilty and just pay the fine? Will it show up on the VA records?

Hard to say, the best approach would likely be to report the violation only if required to do so under the terms of your son's probation.

As for your apparent culpability in the matter as a parent, where did you get the idea that these underage boys could each have one beer? (Perhaps, you yourself had already had more than one in making this suggestion.)
