Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

Statute of limitations

I am in a debate right now about the statute of limitations on Murder, I was told it was indeffinate. My friend believes its very short term (less then 5 years). Im am also guessing its a state by state thing. But I wanted to know, in general how long is it? Or is it a national law since murder is a Federal Crime?

Thanks to whoever answers this question.
