Assault battery of a police officer is a felony with a 6 month mandatory minimum sentence up to a maximum possible of 5 years. However, if you did not intentionally make contact with the officer you are not guilty of assault. Similarly, you have the right to defend yourself against an unlawful arrest or excessive force, so if that is what happened you could also be found not guilty. In many cases neither side is 100% confident of what the jury would do, and so a compromise is possible.
