Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

trespassing

My son and two friends entered their old elementary school on a Sat. They were playing baseball and noticed a door was left unsecured and went in to get a drink of water. Then they ran up and down the halls laughing and set off a motion detector, which dispatched a police officer and a report was filed. They did not break in. There was no vandalism.

Did they break the law by entering? What responsibility did the school have in securing the property? Should the police officer have contacted me the parent? Thank you.

Re: trespassing

It's not clear from your question whether your

son and his friends have been charged with anything although you say the officer filed a report. A filed report does not necessarily mean

filed charges, and unless and until that happens, I would not worry about the answers to your three questions. I will note that the answers to the latter two most likely involve whatever the local jurisdiction considers appropriate.
