Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

During a trial, when is it appropriate to bring up common law? Do you save it for closing statement, or can you cite specific cases as grounds for your objections?

Thanks,

Greg

Without knowing the specific matters being objected to (and under what circumstances), it would be difficult to say. If you're referring to Virginia caselaw which may be generically characterized as the "common law", citations to such cases as a basis for a particular party's position on a given issue, could certainly be appropriate during the course of the trial if they're made at the appropriate time and stage of the trial.
