What happens to uncollected bail money?

Approximately 18 years ago in the state of VA, I put up bail money for someone in trouble. The party in trouble did show up in court, etc. Because I had never been involved in this bail/jail process before, I did not go back to the bail bondsman to get my money back. What happens to this money, and am I still entitled to it? Thank you.

Probably after 18 years all the official records are destroyed. Or the statute of limitations on your claim for the money has expired. Pick one. You snooze, you lose. Except: There is a slim possibility that your money could be listed with the state as Unclaimed, in which case it would stay on the books forever.

Try http://www.trs.state.va.us . For that matter, try http://www.unclaimed.org (to search multi-state unclaimed property databases). It's free, legitimate, and in many cases profitable.
