Legal Question in Criminal Law in Virginia

Unknown Stolen Checks

I frequently go to a bingo hall where the owner knows me personally. One day my friend went with me and had a check he said was from his girlfriend. The owner cashed the check since I said it was good on behalf of my friend. Turns out the check was stolen and the girlfriend pressed charges against her ex for the stolen checks. Am I liable for this, since I told the owner the checks were good? I had no idea that they were stolen. The bingo hall owner says that I am responsible since I said that the checks were good. Is this true? I am not the one who signed the checks, nor did I know that my friend did not have his girlfriends permission to use the checks and that he had actually stolen them. Please help, I do not have the money to pay $250 to cover the amount cashed.

Re: Unknown Stolen Checks

I would say that although you may have no legal liability for this unfortunate

incident, you most assuredly have a moral responsibility and, therefore, you should endeavor to make amends to the bingo hall owner for your foolish

recommendation which occasioned his loss to the extent that you are able to do so.
